Last year Dalian saw the construction and development of shipping
facilities and capacity in line with the blueprint mapped out by the State.
As part of the drive initiated in 2003 to revitalize the country's old
industrial base in the northeast, top priority has been given to "building
Dalian into an important international shipping centre in the region by making
full use of its current port conditions and advantages.
In response to
the plan by the central government, the Dalian city government has taken
positive measures and to date has made significant achievements.
While a
300,000-ton crude oil wharf and a same-capacity ore wharf have been put into
operation, work on three other wharfs ?the second and third phases of the
Dayaowan Container Terminal, the Dalianwan Berth for general goods and the
Dayaowan auto wharf -have also got underway.
The cargo handling capacity
of Dalian registered 145 million tons, and the container throughput soared to
2.21 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) last year.
Dalianwan Port,
with shipping links to more than 300-plus ports in over 160 countries and
regions worldwide, handles 70 per cent of the seaborne trade and 90 per cent of
container transport in the northern region. It has edged onto the
list of the world's major ports with a capacity of 100 million
tons. Additionally, the pilot bonded zone-port interactive area has
opened. The combination of the bonded zone's functional upper hand and the port's
preferential location allow it to fully exploit the port's advantages.
And last year Dalian International Logistics Park was approved the
location of the interactive area by the General Administration of Customs.
The city was among the second batch of pilot cities to launch such a
practice, following Shanghai's example.
Dalian has a comprehensive and
complete transport system covering railways, airports and waterways, which is of
great strategic significance in Northeast Asia.
It currently has 89
international and domestic airline routes.
The Yantai-Dalian railway and
ferry project has broken ground, and the rail-and-sea co-ordinated transport is
also making substantial progress.
In regard to marine transportation,
Dalian has opened more than 40 international cargo lines directly linking the
United States, Japan, India and 40 other countries and regions. It also has many
passenger lines to Shanghai, Tianjin, Yantai, and Weihai and the Republic of
Korea's Chosunilbo.
And Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, one of
China's four major international airports, is one of the largest air-freight
bases in the country's northeast.
